WHPM Grant
Pilot Case Study:

WoodLots Home Page

Frankie Woodgate runs her own horse-logging business based in Kent and travels with her horses to sensitive extraction sites throughout the South East.  Frankie successfully participated in the Forestry Commission’s Woodland Harvesting, Processing & Marketing pilot, which contributed 30% towards the funds required to buy a new horse (Yser) and logging harness, a horse drawn timber forwarder with hydraulic grab and horse lorry.

With a significant capital investment on her part (70%), an effective business plan was essential. The process of developing a business plan for the WHPM Grant application was very demanding, Frankie knows that it helped her identify areas where her business was uneconomic - for example, hiring horse transport for every job - and therefore helped her make decisions on how to improve efficiency.

The new equipment will improve her cost effectiveness and give her greater flexibility in managing projects, altogether strengthening her woodland management business.
