Report Available from Woodland Certification Seminar The seminar was arranged in response to a request from French partners to share in the UK experience of timber certification. The two-day seminar was held 6th-7th September 2001 as part of the Interreg IIC Woodlands & Wood Products in Kent/Nord-Pas de Calais Project. This report provides an excellent resource for anyone with an interest in the issue of timber certification. The reasons for certification are explored at length and real experiences are shared. The differences between the English and the French experience of forestry and certification are also examined. Speakers from the Forest Stewardship Council, World Wide Fund for Nature, Woodland Trust, Tropical Forest Trust, English Woodlands Timber, TRADA, Bio-Regional Charcoal Company, Blueline Office Furniture and CRPF Nord-Pas de Calais/Picardie made contributions. The 60-page report includes full details of all the speakers with transcripts or summaries of their talks and copies of presentations, plus summaries of all discussions. For a copy of the report please contact: Debbie Bartlett, Tel: 01622 221565. (A small fee for postage required.) |

Award
for Innovation in Sustainable Development - East
Sussex County Council have been acknowledged by the National Society for
Clean Air & Environmental Protection (NSCA) for their contribution
towards progressing sustainability through partnerships.
An award from NSCA was presented at WoodFair 2001 by Richard Mills,
chairman of NSCA, and Mike Frend, President of the Petroleum Industries
Association, who support the award. Weald WoodNet was created in 1995 by East Sussex County Council with support from Timber Growers Association, Forestry Commission and Penrose Wood Industry Ltd. Over the past five years the partnership has been successful in promoting the sustainable development of woodland resources in South East England, and has also secured substantial European funding by working with French forest industry partners to undertake research, and develop local marketing initiatives, including WoodLots, Weald WoodFair, Woodland Enterprise Centre and www.woodnet.org.uk . NSCA were encouraged by the way that this partnership has joined forces to raise awareness about the importance of woodland management, and the role of trees in absorbing pollution and carbon sequestration. Current developments include research into the generation of heat and power from waste wood & forestry residues at a small and medium scale. For more information contact: Weald WoodNet, Woodland Enterprise Centre, Hastings Road, Flimwell, East Sussex TN5 7PR, Tel: 01580 879552 info@woodnet.org.uk |
