Wood Fuel for Heating – Can You Supply? WoodLots readers are invited to attend a short workshop at WoodFair 2002 presenting information on how landowners and producers of wood residues can supply the developing wood fuel industry. A second workshop will explore the installation of wood fuel heating systems and the supply of fuel for potential customers.

Lignatherm Ltd, a wood heat supply company for the South East, is currently under development backed by a consortium of partners including WoodNet, Bioenergy Technology Ltd, Energy for Sustainable Development and Penrose Wood Industries Ltd, (with support from East Sussex and Kent County Councils and SEEDA). At present only a third of our available annual timber harvest is utilised and an unknown quantity of wood residues are going to landfill or are burnt. Stimulating markets for wood as a source of energy will provide financial incentives for appropriate woodland management, redirect wood residues away from landfill, benefit biodiversity and the rural economy and provide a renewable low-carbon fuel source. This workshop will ensure that you are fully aware of how you can have a stake in this developing market.
If you are interested in attending one or both of these workshops to be held at WoodFair 2002, please register your interest by emailing: jenny@woodnet.org.uk.

Good news for coppice workers and our ancient woodlands

Funding has been secured from DEFRA to assist those currently working in the coppice industry in the South East to improve chainsaw felling and processing efficiency. David Rossney of Esus Forestry & Woodlands Ltd says  “We aim to improve working systems to reduce fatigue, back strain and increase output. This way we can make the job more attractive to newcomers and help experienced coppice workers stay in business and pass on their knowledge.” Training will be offered free of charge.

The first five-day course starts in October 2002 with the entire programme running over two years, by the end of which 80 coppice cutters will have been updated.  If you have a certificate of competence for maintenance and tree felling using a chainsaw (some or all of the following NPTC units: 10/11, 20/21, or 30/31) and make a significant part of your income from working in coppice, you can apply.

Hazel Restoration for West Sussex Continues with Further Funding

The woodland must have a minimum stocking density of 70% and show the potential for sustaining a productive coppice rotation and supporting a coppice worker. Regrowth must be protected from browsing.

The Stag Beetle: Have you seen it?
At nearly three inches in length, this is the UK’s largest terrestrial beetle. Details of sightings from any era are needed so that research into the insect’s history can assist in its conservation.
