Barry Murphy designed and made this freestanding ash shelving system (left) for the Netherfield Shop as part of the Action In Rural Sussex project to bring fresh local produce into village shops. The ash was sourced from Ashburnham - within walking distance of the shop!





WoodFair 2003 

September 19th, 20th, 21st 


A
mongst all the usual delights found at the biggest forestry, timber and wood-use event in the Southeast, Weald WoodNet will be hosting the Timber Build Network marquee in the Railway Field, with Architectural Ensemble, The Green Oak Carpentry Company, the Forest Products Research Centre of Buckingham Chilterns University College, Buro Happold (timber engineers), Inwood Development Ltd (finger-jointing technology) and WoodLots all contributing. 

Lignatherm Ltd,
the wood fuelled heat supply company for the Southeast, will be at WoodFair alongside technical specialists Bioenergy Technology and Jolly-Mech, suppliers of industrial and domestic wood fuelled heating systems. Have all your questions answered about locally supplied wood fuel, the renewable solution to heat supply.

The Sussex & Surrey Coppice Group
will be at their coppice camp in the woods and can explain all the advantages of getting neglected coppice woodland back into a productive coppice cycle. Talk directly to experienced and skilled coppice workers from the region. The Group are particularly interested in making links with woodland owners with coppice woodlands. See coppice crafts demonstrated including charcoal burning and hurdle making.

Wood Season Highlights

 
WoodFair 2003 marks the beginning of the first East Sussex Wood Season, an extensive programme of events and opportunities running from late September to early November. Particular highlights relating to local timber production and use are: 

Open Day at the Woodland Enterprise Centre 26th October. Your chance to tour this unique sweet chestnut building, set in typical Wealden woodland. Meet the people behind the project and find out all about the wood fuelled heating system. See programme for details.
 
Ben Law, the inspirational Sussex woodsman
will be giving a talk at the Woodland Enterprise Centre on the evening of Friday November 7th. Ben will talk about his approach to woodland management and productivity plus the planning and building of his unique sweet chestnut cruck frame house (as featured earlier this year on Channel 4’s Grand Designs). £6 including refreshments, booking essential, see programme for details.


East Sussex designers and makers
utilising local timbers: Charles Thomson, Barry Murphy, Dinsdale Woodworks, Great Trugs of Sussex, Wooden Wonders, Charlie Camp Rustic Furniture, John Waller Underwoodsman and J Martin Rustic Garden Furniture are all scheduling open days and demonstrations throughout the Wood Season. See programme

The Miller, the Framer and the Chainsaw Sculptor join forces for their Open Day at Dryhill Sawmill on September 27th: Charlie Willment (mobile sawmiller & timber merchant), Bryan Kinnear (traditional timber framer) and Andris Bergs (chainsaw sculptor) will be demonstrating their skills. Includes a visit to a 3-bay timber framed building with roof room. Free, booking essential, see programme.

Coppicers’ Question Time
at Wilderness Wood: Chris Yarrow will lead an expert morning session to introduce coppicing – what is it, how to do it, what to do with the results. In the afternoon watch and ask questions of carpenters making rose arches & garden furniture, pick up tips on making garden constructions, have a go at cleaving chestnut and making roof shingles. Booking essential, £12 per adult.

Free Coppicing Information Signs 


are now available for all coppice workers. The signs explain the process of coppicing to the public and are to be put up while you are working.
